North Street Collective: week 2

Work in progress…

Now that I’ve had time to settle in, I’m starting to establish a routine and focus on the work. The first week was full of brand new experiences, places, and people, and I found I needed quiet time to process it all. As is my practice in my studio at home in Oakland, I began compiling source photos and researching subjects that relate to my overall artistic concepts (generally speaking, mental states and coping mechanisms). I discovered many elements here, somewhat unique to this region yet able to serve as metaphors for universal themes. The rust and corrosion of aging mechanical devices as well as the deteriorating seaweed on the beach reminded me of the human need to break down our notions of self, while the cowboy rope seemed to order and chaos at the same time.
